Where The Bears Go 2027

Romania

1690

The Southern Carpathians are a magical land of wild nature. Wolves, lynx and the king of European forests, the brown bear, all live here, following their secret paths through the mountains and forests. We set off into the Romanian mountains to follow their tracks and discover the beauty of the Carpathians on horseback. We will gallop across meadows and through forests, visit nearly forgotten local shepherd villages and enjoy the wild landscapes of Transylvania. And, of course, we will visit… Dracula’s castle! The trail is center-based, so we return to the same accommodation on most nights. In addition to riding, we will also have a sightseeing day to explore some of the most interesting places in Transylvania, including Sighișoara, Viscri and Bran.

The Southern Carpathians surround the Transylvanian Highlands in a wide arc. At the foot of the mountains lies the sleepy village of Șinca Nouă. On the roads, you are often more likely to see a horse-drawn cart than a car, while life here still follows the rhythm of nature. Pristine forests stretch out all around the village, home to wolves, bears and many other wild animals.

This tour is a center-based ride, so we spend most of the trip at one base – the equestrian centre in Șinca Nouă. It is run by ecologists and nature researchers who combine horse riding with wildlife conservation. Thanks to them, we can discover the local nature from the saddle while respecting the natural environment and the animals that live here.

We mainly ride Arabian horses, Shagya Anglo-Arabs, Kisberi horses and Hungarian half-breeds (Furioso). All the horses are used to riding in the mountains and are happy to move forward, while at the same time being well-trained and responsive to subtle signals from their riders. We usually spend around five hours in the saddle each day, plus a break, but the length of the routes can be adjusted to suit the group.

The mountain terrain also means some steep and long descents. Several times during the ride, we will need to dismount and walk for up to 20 minutes at a time.

But there is more to Transylvania than riding. During the trip, we will also explore some of the region’s highlights: the medieval town of Sighișoara and the fortified church in Viscri – both UNESCO World Heritage Sites – and Bran Castle, famous around the world for its connection to the legend of Dracula.

In the evenings, we can stay at the centre and relax by the fire in the outdoor pavilion or learn more about the wildlife conservation projects run by Conservation Carpathia, a foundation established and run by the owners of the equestrian centre. The foundation created and manages the largest national park in the Făgăraș Mountains, and by joining the ride, you are also helping to support its work.

Tour difficulty and required riding skills
This ride, although center-based and quite comfy, is designed for experienced horse riders. By this, we mean being comfortable and confident in all gaits, including longer canters and gallops in a group of horses and riders over varied and changing terrain. Previous experience of group trail riding is required, along with the skills and fitness needed to spend several hours in the saddle a day at a varied pace and possibly changing weather conditions.

Due to the stable transfer, please plan to arrive in Bucharest no later than 16:00 and book your return flight no earlier than 15:00.

For horse welfare reasons riders’ weight limit is set to 90 kg.

  1. Day 1 Arrival in Romania

Participants arrive in Bucharest by plane or travel to Șinca Nouă by car. If you are flying, please plan your arrival no later than 16:00. The driver will pick up the participants at the airport, and we will then travel by minibus to Șinca Nouă. The journey takes about four hours. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed with a drink. After settling into the guesthouse, we will have dinner together with the guides and the rest of the team.

  2. Day 2 The farm and a primeval forest

After breakfast, we will explore the equestrian centre and meet the horses. The centre has its own organic farm, where vegetables and fruit are grown and animals are raised. Thanks to this, some of the food we enjoy during our stay comes directly from the farm. Then we will set off for our first ride, which will take around 3 hours. The trail leads through meadows, former pastures and old beech forests. The hills offer beautiful views, while the open meadows are perfect for our first trots and canters. Along the way, we will also keep an eye out for tracks of wild boars and bears. After returning to the centre, we will have lunch and then drive to the famous forest in Strâmba Valley, part of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will take a 3-hour hike through forests of centuries-old beech and fir trees, including the tallest known tree in Romania. We will also learn about the ecosystem of the Carpathian mountain forests. In the evening, we will return to the centre for dinner. We can spend the rest of the evening by the fire or in the cosy lounge, while our hosts tell us more about the wildlife conservation projects in the Southern Carpathians that they are involved in.

  3. Day 3 Carpathian meadows

Today we will set off for a full-day ride through the meadows and forests at the foot of the Southern Carpathians. We will spend most of the day out on the trail, until late afternoon. There will be plenty of opportunities for canters across blooming meadows, and along the way we will keep an eye out for tracks of bears and wild boars. The variety of wildflowers will accompany us for much of the route. We will have lunch surrounded by nature, with beautiful mountain views all around us. Upon returning to the farm we’ll refresh, have dinner and spend the rest of the evening chatting and relaxing.

  4. Day 4 Saxon Transylvania

On this day, the horses rest and the group set off on a car tour of Transylvania. The drive will take about 2 hours, we will travel along local roads leading through sleepy Romanian villages. Our first destination is Sighișoara, a fairytale town from the Transylvanian Saxon era. Today it is home to one of the best-preserved medieval town complexes, and one of the main attractions there is the home of the (in)famous Count Dracula. We then continue our journey to the Viscri, one of the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Transylvania. The village was founded some 900 years ago and inhabited by German minority. Most of the people left for Germany in 1990, although a handful of inhabitants decided to stay. We will visit the legendary fortified church from the 12th century and then have lunch consisting of traditional Saxon dishes, largely made with ingredients coming from local gardens and farms, with wine and plum brandy to top it. The guides are passionate about Transylvania’s history, so it’s a perfect occasion to learn a bit about the region. In the evening, we return to Șinca Nouă.

  5. Day 5 Forgotten villages

After breakfast, we leave Șinca Nouă and set off on horseback into the wild mountains. Over the next two days, we will ride around 50 kilometres in total, travelling there and back through the forests of Transylvania. There will be plenty of opportunities for long canters, and along the way we will also look out for tracks of wolves and bears. In the afternoon, we will reach small mountain farms where people still live in a traditional way. The locals still work the fields with horses and oxen, and some farms do not even have running water or electricity. We will have a chance to see their everyday life up close – a way of living that has changed very little over the last few decades. For the night, we will set up camp near one of these farms, in a beautiful spot with views of the mountains. Dinner will be prepared over the campfire, followed by a long evening around the fire under the stars. We will sleep in tents. If you prefer to return to the guesthouse for the night, the hosts can arrange transport after dinner. You will need to walk for about 20 minutes to reach the road where the car can pick you up. The next morning, we will return to the horses and continue our journey back through the forests along roads and trails.

    * The two-day trip with an overnight stay in the mountains depends on the weather. If the weather forecast is not good, we will replace the overnight camping trip with two day rides and accommodation at the equestrian centre.

  6. Day 6 Southern Carpathians

After a night in nature, we will pack our things, take down the camp and saddle up our horses to set off on our way back. We will continue through the forests of Transylvania along forest roads and trails, with the Southern Carpathians all around us. Along the way, we will enjoy beautiful views of the mountains and keep an eye out for tracks of wolves and bears. Gradually, the trail will lead us towards Șinca Nouă, which we will reach in the afternoon. As usual, we will have dinner together and spend the rest of the evening relaxing and enjoying the evening.

  7. Day 7 Dracula's Castle

This is the last day of horse riding. There will be lots of cantering through meadows and mountain glades. In the middle of the day we will return to the center, say goodbyes to our horses and have a delicious lunch. Then we set off by car to the Bran Castle, known as Dracula’s castle! As you will find out during the tour, the legend doesn’t quite coincide with the historical facts, but… a legend is a legend. 🙂 In the late afternoon we will return to the center and hold a farewell dinner together.

  8. Day 8 Farewell to Romania

It’s time to say goodbye to Transylvania. After breakfast, we will pack our luggage and take a minibus back to Bucharest Airport. Due to the travel time from Șinca Nouă, please plan your departure flight no earlier than 15:00.

The guide may modify the day-by-day plan and particular daily routes according to weather conditions, the group’s riding skills and unforeseen events or circumstances.

This center-based ride in Romania offers a high standard accommodation and service. We stay at a modern equestrian centre, in comfortable rooms with private bathrooms. We have access to Wi-Fi, electricity and hot water, and bed linen and towels are provided. The standard rooms accommodate 2 or 3 people, but a single room can be arranged upon request. The supplement is €125 per week. During the ride, we spend one night away from the centre. A camping night is planned, but if you prefer not to sleep in a tent, we can arrange a transfer to the guesthouse in the evening and back to the campsite in the morning. You will need to walk to the nearest road, which takes about 20 minutes. The camping night takes place from late spring to early autumn. During the rest of the year, we spend this night at the equestrian centre. In summer, if the weather is not suitable, the camping night may also be replaced with a night at the centre. You will need a sleeping bag for the camping night. You can bring your own or rent one on site for €15.

The cuisine is based on traditional Romanian flavours. Kitchen teams combine regional recipes with the principles of healthy eating and use almost exclusively organic ingredients, mainly grown and produced at the centre’s own land and sourced from trusted local farms. You can taste homemade cold meats, fresh vegetables and fruit from the centre’s own garden, as well as good-quality olive oil. For those who enjoy a drink, organic wines, beers from local breweries and homemade liqueurs are available.

The whole trip is organised according to the principles of responsible tourism. We support the local community and the region while taking care not to disturb the natural environment and wildlife in the mountains.

Equipment

We use universal, versatile English-style saddles and endurance type saddles, suitable for long-distance endurance riding. The stirrups are wide and allow for stable leg support. for some of the horses we use brest collars and tail docks. Horse pads are equipped with pouches, but it is a good idea to keep valuables (documents, money, phone) in a waist bag or pouch.

Bridles are quite typical, we use bits.

Please note that a riding helmet is obligatory for this tour. You can bring your own helmet or use the ones available on site.
