Transylvania

Romania

1960

Deep in the mountains, surrounded by pristine forests, Transylvania shines with its beauty and heritage. We will hack through picturesque slopes of the Southern Carpathian Mountains on horseback, canter through charming valleys and rest in medieval villages. The region offers a variety of experiences, combining exploring nature and scenery of its Carpathian landscape with rich historical and ethnical legacy. It’s also both an active ride and a comfy tour following the ideas of responsible, ecological tourism.

Transylvania is a magical land of mists drifting over the hills, medieval villages sleeping in the shadows of castles and fortified churches, and warm-hearted people living in harmony with nature.

The tour in Transylvanian is pretty comfy, with high-standard accommodation and great food all the way. We stay overnight in beautiful agritourism farms (some of which are located in historic buildings in villages). We eat healthy and tasty meals prepared from organic products grown locally. We enjoy and amaze at Carpathian nature without interfering with biodiversity or disturbing the natural habitats of wild animals such as wolves, bears and many other species.

We ride mainly Arabian horses, Shagya angloarabs, as well as Kisberi horses and Hungarian half-breed horses (Furioso). All the horses are well-trained, energetic and eager to go forward, but at the same time they are well-balanced and respond to the lightest of signals. The horses are solidly prepared for taking us on a six day ride.

The daily parts take about five hours of riding plus breaks. We start and finish at our base in the village of Șinca Nouă, a small village near Brasov, located in south-eastern Transylvania. In the course of the tour we make a loop through beautiful landscapes and stay in interesting, comfortable places on the way.

This trail ride is an active, relatively fast one, requiring good riding skills and decent physical condition.

For horse welfare reasons riders’ weight limit is set to 85 kg.

  1. Day 1 Arrival in Romania

Participants fly into Bucharest or arrive by car to Șinca Nouă. It’s best to arrive not later than 15:00/15:30. Then, around 16:00, we will collect all incoming riders and drive to Șinca Nouă. The drive takes 4 – 5 hours. Once settled in rooms riders can refresh and have a walk to take a look around the farm. In the evening a welcome dinner will take place.

  2. Day 2 Carpathian Foothills

After breakfast we will get to know our horses, saddle up and ride out towards our adventure! We have 29 kilometres ahead of us, which will take about six hours. The trail leads through the Carpathian foothills and picturesque valleys to the Olt river plain. We will pass several villages, with some good spots for pleasant canters on the way. Next we will cross the river and reach the village of Hălmeag on the other side. There we will finish our ride for that day and enjoy the hospitality of local families.

  3. Day 3 The Hills of Transylvania

Once we finish breakfast we saddle up and ride out, with around 26 kilometres and just over 5 hours in the saddle ahead of us. From Hălmeag we will ride along the Olt river to the village of Șona, where we will plunge between the hills of Transylvania. From the route along the ridges of the hills we will enjoy a beautifu view of the Făgăraș Mountains. In the afternoon we will arrive in Cobor, an old Hungarian village located in the midst of areas traditionally settled by the Saxons. Our hosts have been running a remarkable project there, aimed at protecting and restoring a nearly abandone village and its houses. They also run an an organic farm on site, with a strong focus on biodiversity. We will stay in Cobor for two nights.

  4. Day 4 The land of the Transylvanian Saxons

On this day we will ride to explore the Cobor area, which will take us about 6 hours. There region is home to multiple specie of birds, including bee-eaters, hoopoes, european stonechats, great grey shrikes and lesser spotted eagles. If the weather is good and the ground is dry we will use the opportunity and gallop fast along local paths and dirt roads. In the late afternoon we will return to the farm, rest in the old stables or in a very interesting, underground cellar ”bar”. We stay in Cobor for a second night.

  5. Day 5 Viscri

Today we are heading to Viscri, the most famous Saxon village in Transylvania. The trail this day is 38 kilometres long and will take us about 7 hours. The village of Viscri was founded in the 12th century and since 1999, together with six other villages, it’s been place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The village has been largely restored to its original form, together with its biggest landmark and attraction, a beautifully preserved fortified church. We will spend the night in old farm buildings converted into small guest houses, where you can enjoy traditional Saxon cuisine. In the evening we will also have a bit of time for a walk in the countryside.

  6. Day 6 Fortified church and a wooden lodge

After breakfast we will visit the fortified church, which offers a nice view of the village and the surrounding area. Before saddling up we will have lunch and then mount up and ride. Today we have a short and fairly fast route ahead of us: 22 kilometres in 3-3.5 hours. We will cross scenic hills and emerge from the forest into a meadow near the village of Jibert, where a wooden lodge – our place for tonight – is located. In the evening we will have a delicious dinner and enjoy peaceful and quiet atmosphere of the Transylvanian countryside.

  7. Day 7 Back in Olt Valley

This is the last day of our ride in Transylvania. We have about 34 kilometres and 6 hours in the saddle ahead of us. The trail today allows for a solid doese of cantering and galloping through hills and forests. Along the way we will pass picturesque oak pastures before returning to the Olt river valley and descending from the hills into the Hălmeag area. There we will dismount and our horses will return comfortably to their stables by car. Before going back Șinca Nouă ourselves by a minibus will have a snack and a few moments to rest. Upon returning we can refresh and get ready for our last, farewell dinner in Transylvania.

  8. Day 8 Time to go home

It’s time to leave beautiful Transylvania. After breakfast a minibus will take all riders to the airport in Bucharest.

The guide might modify the route according to weather conditions and group's riding skills

The expedition to Transylvania is a pretty high-standard one, aimed at riders looking for comfy rides. We spend the night in beautiful agritourisms located in historic country houses. The rooms are mainly 2- and 3-bedded; in some of the accommodations single rooms are available by prior arrangement (EUR 15 per night, payable on site). We have access to wifi, electricity and hot water. Clean bed linen and towels are also provided.

Traditional Romanian cuisine is very tasty and rich, although pretty high in calories. However, the hosts and cooks during this tour masterfully combine regional cuisine with healthy eating principles. We use almost exclusively organic ingredients, mostly home-made or from trusted local farmers. You will be able to taste homemade meats, fresh vegetables and fruit from your own garden or delicious olive oil. Of alcoholic beverages, organic wines, beers from local breweries and homemade liquors are available for an additional charge.

The organisation of the entire trip in Transylvania is based on the principles of conscious and sutainable tourism. We support the local people and the region and take extra care not to disturb the natural processes in the mountains.

Equipment

In Transylvania we use versatile English saddles and endurance type saddles, suitable for long-distance riding. The stirrups are wide and allow for stable leg support. We sometimes use breast collars and tail docks. Pads are equipped with saddle bags or pouches, but it is a good idea to keep valuables (documents, money, phone) in a waist bag or pouch.

Bridles are typical, we use bits.

Please note that a riding helmet is obligatory for this tour. You can bring your own helmet or use the ones available on site.

During the tour in Transylvania a car will assist the group and transport all your luggage between subsequent locations. For the daily rides we take only what we need for that particular day.

  • electronic devices, e.g. camera
  • sunscreen
