Treasures of Southern Albania
Albania
This winter-time ride in Albania is a unique, different type of a tour. We will spend 4 days in the saddle, traversing valleys and hills, crossing rivers and forests. For 2 days during the tour we will switch live horses to mechanical ones to reach more remote corners of Albania. We will visit the ruins of ancient cities, traverse medieval caravan routes, see post-communist bunkers and visit the cultural treasures of southern Albania.

Our winter time ride in Albania is a unique expedition combining horse riding and soaking into local history, culture and vast heritage of the country. We will visit genuine archaeological treasures of the region: walk amongst ruins of ancient cities, peek inside medieval temples, see the remains of the communist past. We will also enjoy hot springs in the mountains and reach the shores of the Ionian Sea. A large part of the tour is spent, of course, in the saddle, with a car-propelled adventure on top of the experience.
For the first two full days of the tour we will ride horses and combine it with visiting some of the most important local heritage sites. On the first of those two days we will ride to the foothils of the Bureto mountain and visit some of the cultural highlights of the area. On the next day we ride along the Drina rover valley to reach the Antigonea National Park. The ruins of an ancient town of Antigonea, built by king Pyrrhus, are one of the most important cultural spots of southern Albania.
The next two days are with mechanical horses. We change our steeds to 4×4 vehicles and go to see the “Balkan Pompei”, then go to the seaside city of Saranda, go to beautiful Gjirokaster, enjoy Benje hot springs, visit Pewet – the “City of Roses” and a number of other highlights of the region.
Then we’ll be back to our horses and ride out again. For another two days we will visit numerous small villages, see the picturesque Drino river, pass medieval churches and meet a local expert in Albania floklore. On the 7th day of the tour we will finishe the ride in the stables and hold a farewell dinner.
Our guides are, first and foremost, true horse and equestrian enthusiasts. Years ago they took on the challenge of recreating the vanishing breed of the Albanian horse (a mix of primitive tarpans and Arabian horses). They run a breeding programme aimed at creating great trail riding horses, with amazing results. Theoutcome is a relatively small but energetic, brave and disciplined trail horse under your saddle.
The winter tour in Southern Albania is also suitable for less experienced riders (as opposed to summer tours meant for advanced riders). All you need is to be able to walk, trot and have your first steady canters under your belt.
We recommend using helmets, especially on the first day when familiarising yourself with the specific terrain and riding style.
Rider weight limit for this trail is set to 90 kg / 200 lbs.

In guest houses are mostly double or triple and in Gjirokaster, on the first, third, sixth and last night, a single room is available upon earlier booking (€25 per night, payable locally).
In the course of the tour we taste traditional dishes. Albanian cuisine, in general, is quite varied, offering a multitude of tastes. Traditional Albanian meals are based on different types of meat and delicious local cheeses, but the is no shortage of plant-based dishes either. Additionally we get to taste organic, locally grown vegetables and fruits, honey, jams and eggs, as well as homemade desserts and sweet snacks. We drink spring water, infusions based on mountain herbs, as well as local wine and spirits.
Equipment
You will ride in good quality English-type trail saddles. Bridles are of regular construction, we use bits. The equipment in general is what most riders are used to.
Every horse is equipped with small saddle bags for water, additional clothes and other handy items. Additional straps (for attaching a raincoat) might come in handy.
Please note: we recommend using a helmet while riding.
