Western Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina

1400

We’re heading to Bosnia and Herzegovina — more precisely, to the western part of Herzegovina. The region, fairly unknown to most people, has much to offer. Unspoilt nature, picturesque landscapes, history dating back to medieval and ancient times, peaceful atmosphere and a lot of interesting landmarks, both natural and historical make up to a great place to ride. Add a family-run riding center and an interesting local breed of horses to it and there you have it: a perfect setup to explore Western Herzegovina from the saddle.

The equestrian base is located on a peaceful family estate near the town of Grude, in Western Herzegovina, close to the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. This is a land of limestone hills, fertile fields and Mediterranean vegetation, shaped by the distinctive karst landscape of the Dinaric region. Rivers disappearing underground, clear springs, caves and small lakes give the area a character quite unlike that of the better-known mountainous parts of Bosnia. Far from large cities and busy tourist centres, the countryside around Grude offers open space, tranquillity and an authentic glimpse of rural Herzegovinian life.

This ride is center-based – it combines daily trail rides with the comfort and friendly atmosphere of a family-run equestrian centre. We explore the surrounding countryside in several directions and return to the ranch after daily rides, We ride through quiet village roads, agricultural landscapes, riverbanks, lakes, forests, open fields and gently rolling hills. Some trails are slower and more scenic, while others provide opportunities for longer trots and canters across open terrain. On the way we will visit multiple interesting spots and highlights, both natural and human-made.

The estate and riding programme are managed by Marija with her family and the Stina Horse Club team. Marija is a qualified sports coach and an accomplished rider who has competed in dressage, showjumping and endurance riding, and has repeatedly been recognised as one of the leading equestrian athletes in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Her family has been breeding, training and showing horses for around twenty years, so horses are not merely part of their work – they are a big part of their lives, a way of life. Throughout the week Marija and her team will guide the rides and introduce you to the traditions and warm hospitality of rural Herzegovina. The host family has an interesting story regarding how they became horse riders and breeders, but that’s one to be told on the spot by them.

This ride is also a great one to slow down a bit. We’re in no rush, so there will also be time to take part in preparing the horses for riding and tending to them after rides, relaxing at the estate and enjoying home-made Herzegovinian food together with our hosts. Since we spend all nights at the ranch and riding center, there will plenty of opportunities and reasons to talk about horses and everything around them. The riding club teaches riding and runs trainings for dressage, jumping and endurance competitions and trainers are on the spot, with you. In case of severe weather we’ll always find something to do in the center and stables.

Many of the horses that we ride here are bred locally, born, raised and trained by our hosts. They originate from a Bosnian Mountain Horse, although the breed was being mixed with Arabian horses for a very long time. A large number of our hosts’ horses have a strong dominance of Arabian blood, with more oriental and typical Arabian features. Other horses show more features typical of Bosnian horses, retain a more compact, stronger, and “terrain-oriented” type. Both types are sure-footed, eager to ride and well-trained, perfectly suited to riding through the region’s varied terrain types.

This trail is a moderately demanding one, meant for confident horse riders. Both the terrain and riding pace vary throughout days, making it both a chilled-out and active ride, depending on the day and stage of the trail.

Rider weight limit for this trail is set to 90 kg / 200 lbs.

  1. Day 1 Welcome to Herzegovina

Riders arrive in Bosnia and Herzegovina and reach the riding center in Grude. We can provide transfer from Sarajevo or Split (in Croatia) upon request. On the spot you will get to know the hosts and other riders, settle in the ranch house and catch a moment to rest after your travel. Before dinner your hosts will offer a short introduction and briefing on the ride, horses and everything about and around your stay. In the evening a dinner will be served, with some home-made food specialities.

  2. Day 2 Warm-up ride

After breakfast and morning coffee (or tea) it’s time to meet the horses, get yourself and them ready, and take a first ride around the ranch. We will start the ride easy, exploring the surroundings to get to know your horse and see if you are all fine with your tack. After the ride we will have a lunch break and a bit of time to rest. In the afternoon hours it’s time to ride again to complete local exploration. We will return to the stables in the early evening and ten have dinner together.

  3. Day 3 Krenica Lake

It’s time to get ready for a bit more riding. Everyone can help prepare the horses, although your guide will be saddling and checking each horse. Today’s ride will take you uphill, on a riding route through the Blaževići village. On the way, we will pass the local Church of St Luke, the patron saint of horses and animals. Lunch will be served back at the ranch. In the afternoon we will ride out again, this time to Krenica Lake. We will ride through fields, with really nice views all around us and often accompanied by wildlife: rabbits, wild ducks, pheasants and other birds. The lake is very picturesque and pretty deep: official sources indicate 47 meters, but actual depth in unknown due to underwater caves. It’s also surrounded by numerous local legends and stories. After a break there we will ride back to the ranch for dinner with our hosts, who will serve traditional food and drinks.

  4. Day 4 Herbs and grapevines

After breakfast we start our ride from the ranch, cross water channels a few times to reach open fields of Artemisia. The name is self-explanatory: the route runs through fields of artemisia, an aromatic herb used in medicine. Cantering through the fields and enjoying the amazing and unique smell of the plants is quite an experience. Lunch will be served in the nature. We will enjoy a bit of rest in the shade of trees while our horses have a bite of grass. Then will head back to the ranch, riding next to a number of water channels and passing local vineyards on our way. Once back at the ranch we will unsaddle our horses and tend to them, and then sit together at a dinner table.

  5. Day 5 Hills, oaks and Roman remnants

Today we start the ride heading towards vineyards and passing orchards and fields of corn, potatoes, or wheat, depending on the season of the year. Then we will ride onto hilly trails that are either up or down, so the pace through the day will be relatively slow. Outside the village we will follow a route going up to cross a hill called Svetigora. Once on the other side opens a serene, pastoral valley called ”Omerovac” – a family-owned field surrounded by four hills: Krstina, Ograda, Orlov Kuk and Svetigora that we rode from. We will stay there for a really nice lunch break, in the deep shade of old oak trees. We can rest or… play traditional games of Herzegovina. Sooner or later we will start heading back to the ranch.  On our way home from valley we will ecounter tombstones – remnants of an ancient Roman necropolis. On some of them you might still be able to recognize symbols and writing. From there we ride downhill and reach the ranch afterwards, right on time for dinner.

  6. Day 6 Matrica River trail

After a solid breakfast we saddle up and ride out. Today we take a pictureque trail that follows a small river called Matica. The name is local, as people in villages downstream give it different names, until it eventually reaches the Adriatic Sea. The route we’ll be riding today was used in 2010 as an endurance trail during National Championship of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the following years multiple other endurance races took part here. On the way will stop at an amazing place, cool the horses and riders and have a lunch break at the river. Towards late afternoon we will ride back along the river and local channels to the ranch. Once we return and tend to our horses dinner will be served.

  7. Day 7 Lake, cave and the last day of riding

It’s our last day in the saddle and it’s a very interesting one! After breakfast we will ride to a beautiful lake called Nuga. On the way we have a hill to climb in order to reach the entrance of a cave called “Ravlića pećina” that we will, of course, visit. Further on the trail we will reach the source of the Matica river that we followed a day ago. The area was known for watermills that grinded grain into flour in the past centuries. Today not much is left of them, barely old building and mill parts, but the landscape is undoubtely beautiful. Picnic lunch will be served at the river, and then we will visit the “Peć Mlini” (”Five Mills”) Park. After break we will mount our horses up for the last time. First we will ridee back to Nuga lake and take a different route that will leads us to the stables. There we will unsaddle our horses, thank them for a great ride and take them to the pasture or stable for the last time. Then it’s time for us – it’s our last, farewell dinner at the ranch.

  8. Day8 Farewell to Herzegovina

It’s time to leave Bosnia and Gerzegovina and head home. Transfers to Sarajevo or Split can be arranged.

The guide might modify the day-by-day plan and particular daily routes according to weather conditions, group's riding skills and random events and phenomenons.

We spend all nights during the tour on a ranch, in a newly built house with a sauna and an inside pool. The place is nice and cozy, with all the regular facilities one might need.

Riders are accommodated in double rooms by default. Single rooms are available upon earlier request, depending on availability, and at an additional fee.

All meals are provided: starting from a dinner on the first day to breakfast on the last day. All dinners, all breakfasts and some of the lunches will be served at the ranch. Four lunches (weather permitting) will be served in the nature, in a form of picnics during riding breaks. Additionally, various snacks, drinks – water, tea, coffee, wine and beer – will be available.

Local cuisine is very tasty and quite rich, with multiple influences and tastes coming from a number of cultures and ethnic groups, largely from Balkan countries, Greece, Italy and Turkey. There is no shortage of meats, vegetables and pastry-based dishes. Herzegovina is a wine-making region, so we have the opportunity to taste local wine. Many products and ingredients are homemade and come from local farmers and producers.
