We’re taking you on ride along the Slovenian – Italian border, into a land of medieval castles, underground lakes, and a vast network of spectacular caves. This region impresses at first sight and reveals even more of its character and richness the deeper you explore it. Beyond its natural beauty, you’ll be captivated by the historic stone architecture, complete with covered passageways and balconies. We’ll taste traditional dishes shaped by centuries of Mediterranean culinary influences dating back to the Roman Empire. This ride is the perfect chance to reconnect with those carefree days of childhood and bring back memories of summers spent in the countryside.

The Karst Plateau is, geologically speaking, the best-studied karst region in all of Europe. Researchers began exploring it as early as the 17th century, and the very term “karst” originates from its name. Nestled between the Vipava Valley and the Adriatic Sea, the Slovenian Karst impresses at every turn – with its sweeping views, unusual rock formations, distinctive architecture, and rich cultural heritage. The region is famed for its stunning castles and, above all, for its vast number of caves—more than 8,000 discovered and explored to date. For nearly half a century the area was completely closed to tourism, and today it is being rediscovered, steadily becoming one of Slovenia’s most sought-after destinations.

The Slovenian expedition begins and ends in the village of Bač, a place that perfectly captures the spirit of the region. We will explore the surrounding countryside on horseback, with opportunities to visit some of the area’s most remarkable sites and historical landmarks along the way.

Among the highlights is Predjama Castle – the largest cave castle in the world and an unconquered marvel of medieval architecture. We will also venture deep into the fascinating underground world of Postojna Cave, renowned for its stunning rock formations.

Our route will take us through mountain trails, past several castles, picturesque villages, caves, disappearing lakes, and welcoming stays in charming accommodations hosted by friendly locals.

Throughout the ride, we use a mix of Quarter Horses and other warmblood breeds common in the region, such as Thoroughbreds and Arabians. The stables also include two Icelandic horses, moving in the breed’s characteristic tölt – a very comfortable variation of the trot – ideal for teenagers or lighter-built riders. All horses are exceptionally well trained for trail rides, eager and lively, and always ready to break into a canter when the opportunity arises.

Beyond riding, you can swim in the river, enjoy additional sightseeing, or simply wander the area and stumble upon hidden gems.

The trail is moderately challenging and suitable for confident riders. Both terrain and pace vary throughout the day, making the experience a blend of relaxation and adventure, depending on the stage of the route.

The minimum age is 16, and minors may participate only when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Rider weight limit for this ride is 95 kg.

  1. Day 1 First delight

Riders fly into Ljubljana, where they will be transferred to the first accommodation on the route. The drive takes roughly one hour. It’s best to plan your arrival for the morning or around midday (no later than 2:00 PM). There is also the option of flying to Venice and taking a train to the town of Postojna, from where a transfer is available. In this case, the car journey takes just under half an hour. Upon arrival, we’ll settle in at the Požar guest farm. We’ll have a bit of time to freshen up and relax after the trip. Before dinner, you can take a stroll through the village and its surroundings. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a traditional welcome dinner – home-cooked dishes prepared from local ingredients.

  2. Day 2 Vanishing Lake

After breakfast, around 9:00 AM, we will set off by car on a short journey to the neighboring village of Šembije, where we will meet our horses. After getting acquainted with the equipment and our mounts, we will begin the ride. Our first destination is the hilltop village of Tabor, where we will take a short break to enjoy the views and hear stories about the history of this unique place. We will then continue to a local restaurant for lunch. Afterward, we will pass Kalec Castle, surrounded by old linden and chestnut trees, before stopping at the Palčje Intermittent Lake. This remarkable lake appears and disappears depending on the season and rainfall – hence its name. If we are lucky, we may even have the chance to let our horses wade in its waters. If the lake happens to be “missing,” we will instead enjoy a gallop across open terrain! Overnight stay in Bač.

  3. Day 3 Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

After breakfast, we will set off towards the stronghold of the legendary knight and robber baron Erasmus of Lueg – Predjama Castle. Originally built into the rock in the 12th century and expanded in the 15th century, this remarkable fortress is dramatically set halfway up a 123-meter cliff. This extraordinary medieval structure, leading into a labyrinth of rock corridors, is the largest cave castle in the world and is listed in the Guinness World Records. Beneath it lies an extensive network of tunnels and caves, crowned by the largest (over 20 km long) and most spectacular of them all – Postojna Cave. The visit begins with a unique underground train ride that takes visitors deep into a fascinating world of rock and darkness. From there, a walking tour leads through long corridors into a series of stunning chambers, each more breathtaking than the last. An additional highlight is the chance to encounter the so-called “cave dragon” – the mysterious olm – adding a touch of intrigue to this unforgettable experience. After lunch at a local pub, we will continue with several more kilometers of afternoon riding at a varied pace, heading towards our overnight stay in Landol, where we will rest in a cozy guesthouse.

  4. Day 4 Childhood memories

After breakfast, we’ll saddle up and continue our journey. We’ll ride deep into the forest to enjoy the peace and take in the beauty of nature. The trail will lead us to… a secret spot, just as we start to feel a little hungry. We’ll stop there for a break and a rest before heading on again. In the afternoon, we’ll arrive at the Volk farm in Suhorje, where we’ll spend the night… sleeping on hay! That evening we’ll also have the chance to spend time with a herd of Appaloosa horses. Our hosts, the owners of the farm, are proud breeders of this remarkable breed and love to share stories. It’s a perfect opportunity to learn some fascinating facts about those horses. In summer – and for the brave, even in other seasons – you’ll also have the chance to feel like a kid again and take a dip in the nearby river.

  5. Day 5 The Secret Life of Nature

This day brings a long ride through the Brkini region, known for its fruit orchards and varied terrain with plenty of climbs and descents. Along the way, we’ll pass Prem Castle, a 13th-century fortress likely built on the remains of Roman fortifications. The castle is very distinctive, with cylindrical towers and Renaissance arcades surrounding its courtyard and a small stone well. Documented in 1220 for the first time, it once served as an administrative center and changed hands among prominent families, including the Knights of Udo and the Habsburgs. We’ll stop for lunch at a nearby pub. Strengthened – and perhaps even fortified – by local delicacies, we’ll begin the final stretch of our journey back to Šembije. Once we arrive, we’ll unsaddle our horses for the last time and thank them for the entire adventure. We’ll spend the night at the Požar guest farm, already known to us from our two first evenings.

  6. Day 6 Farewell to Slovenia

All riders will will be transferred to Ljubljana Airport for their return flight home.

The guide may modify the route depending on weather conditions and the riding skills of the group.

During the expedition, we’ll stay in a different place almost every night, though always under a roof. Every host is a true horse enthusiast.

We spend the first, second and the last night at the Požar guest farm. The third night will be spent under the roof of the Lipizzaner Lodge in Landol, hosted by Hana and Cris from England. The penultimate night takes us to the Volk farm in Suhorje, where we’ll feel like kids again sleeping on hay. Sleeping bags are needed here, though the conditions – by barn standards – are quite comfortable. For those who prefer a bed with sheets, an alternative accommodation in a nearby village can be arranged for an additional fee. This option must be requested in advance before the ride begins (but honestly, sleeping on hay is way more fun 🙂 ).

We provide full board throughout the main riding expedition. Breakfasts and dinners are served at the day’s starting or ending location. Our buffet breakfast includes a wide selection of breads, homemade jams, cold cuts and cheeses, yogurts, eggs, honey, fresh fruit, as well as tea and coffee.

Lunches are served at various special locations along the route, and occasionally in local pubs offering delicious homemade dishes. Most meals include meat, but vegetarian options can be arranged upon prior request.

Dinners feature tasting portions of unique local wines from the Istrian Peninsula, with opportunities to sample stronger regional spirits as well.

Equipment

On this ride, most of the horses are ridden primarily in Western saddles. We use bits, and the bridles feature the long leather straps typical of Western riding. String halters are also used. English-style saddles are available, but only for Icelandic horses.

Each horse is equipped with small saddlebags (for water, for example) and straps for carrying items such as a jacket or raincoat. We ride lightweight, with access to the support vehicle and luggage during breaks and overnight stops.

As always, wearing a helmet is recommended. Emergency helmets are available on site if needed, but we strongly advise bringing your own equipment.

What you should take with you

The Slovenian ride is a pretty comfortable one. All nights are spent under roofs, in charming agritourism farms, guesthouses, and lodges. The support vehicle transports luggage between the overnight bases. For the daily riding stages, you only need a small waist bag or a similar solution – for your phone and personal items.

A detailed packing list with our comments and recommendations will be sent in an organisational email one month before the ride.

  • Passport or ID card
  • Cash – euro (EUR)
  • Electronic devices (camera, power bank, etc.)
  • Small waist bag or backpack (for documents, phone)
  • Canteen or other water container (a plastic water bottle works fine)
  • Sleeping bag for the hay overnight
  • Sunscreen with a high SPF

  • Sun hat or other head covering
  • Personal riding gear: helmet, breeches, chaps, gloves, etc.
  • Trekking boots (much more suitable than standard jodhpur boots in these conditions)
