Castles and Caves

Slovenia

1540

We’re taking you on ride along the Slovenian – Italian border, into a land of medieval castles, underground lakes, and a vast network of spectacular caves. This region impresses at first sight and reveals even more of its character and richness the deeper you explore it. Beyond its natural beauty, you’ll be captivated by the historic stone architecture, complete with covered passageways and balconies. We’ll taste traditional dishes shaped by centuries of Mediterranean culinary influences dating back to the Roman Empire. The Karst is also the homeland of the Lipizzaner horses — still serving at European royal courts until this day. This ride is the perfect chance to reconnect with those carefree days of childhood and bring back memories of summers spent in the countryside.

The Karst Plateau is, geologically speaking, the best-studied karst region in all of Europe. Researchers began exploring it as early as the 17th century, and the very term “karst” originates from its name. Nestled between the Vipava Valley and the Adriatic Sea, the Slovenian Karst impresses at every turn — with its sweeping views, unusual rock formations, distinctive architecture, and rich cultural heritage. The region is famed for its stunning castles and, above all, for its vast number of caves—more than 8,000 discovered and explored to date. For nearly half a century the area was completely closed to tourism, and today it is being rediscovered, steadily becoming one of Slovenia’s most sought-after destinations.

Our Slovenian ride begins in the village of Bač, a place that perfectly captures the local spirit. We’ll set out to explore the surroundings on horseback, with opportunities along the way to visit some of the region’s most remarkable landmarks. Among them is the world’s largest cave castle—Predjama Castle — an unconquered marvel of medieval engineering. The route leads us along mountain trails, past several castles, through picturesque villages, caves, a “vanishing” lake, and into charming guesthouses run by wonderfully hospitable hosts.

Throughout the ride, we use a mix of Quarter Horses and other warmblood breeds common in the region, such as Thoroughbreds and Arabians. The stables also include two Icelandic horses, moving in the breed’s characteristic tölt — a very comfortable variation of the trot — ideal for teenagers or lighter-built riders. All horses are exceptionally well trained for trail rides, eager and lively, and always ready to break into a canter when the opportunity arises.

Beyond riding, you can swim in the river, enjoy additional sightseeing, or simply wander the area and stumble upon hidden gems.

The trail is moderately challenging and suitable for confident riders. Both terrain and pace vary throughout the day, making the experience a blend of relaxation and adventure, depending on the stage of the route.

The minimum age is 16, and minors may participate only when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Rider weight limit for this ride is 95 kg.

  1. Day 1 First delight

Riders fly into Ljubljana, where they will be transferred to the first accommodation on the route. The drive takes roughly one hour. It’s best to plan your arrival for the morning or around midday (no later than 2:00 PM). There is also the option of flying to Venice and taking a train to the town of Postojna, from where a transfer is available. In this case, the car journey takes just under half an hour. Upon arrival, we’ll settle in at the Požar guest farm. We’ll have a bit of time to freshen up and relax after the trip. Before dinner, you can take a stroll through the village and its surroundings. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a traditional welcome dinner—home-cooked dishes prepared from local ingredients.

  2. Day 2 Vanishing Lake

After breakfast, at around 9:00 AM, we’ll hop into the car for a short drive to the nearby village of Šembije, where we’ll meet our horses. After getting to know them and a brief introduction to the basics of western riding, we’ll start our ride. Our first destination is the hilltop village of Tabor. We’ll take a short break there to enjoy the views and listen to stories about the history of the place. Afterward, we’ll ride on to a local restaurant for lunch. Following the meal, we’ll pass the castle of Kalec—surrounded by ancient linden and chestnut trees—and make our way to the “Vanishing Lake” of Palško. This basin appears and disappears depending on the season, which is how it earned its name. If we’re lucky, we may even get the chance to take the horses in for a splash. If the lake happens to be “gone” 🙂 we’ll continue straight to our lodging in Trnje. We’ll be welcomed at a family-run guesthouse by Lisa and Zvone — horse lovers and judges at international Icelandic horse competitions.

  3. Day 3 Cave Castle

In the morning we’ll set out toward the legendary hideout of the famous bandit Erasmus Lügger — Predjama Castle. Originally carved into the rock in the 12th century and expanded in the 15th, this fortress sits halfway up a 123-meter cliff. Leading directly into a labyrinth of stone passages, it is the largest cave castle in the world and proudly listed in the Guinness World Records! Beneath it lies an extensive network of tunnels and caverns, crowned by the most magnificent of them all: Postojna Cave. That day, we have two options to choose from. After lunch at a local pub, we can drive to the castle and explore it in depth—with a local guide who will reveal its history and secrets. Alternatively, we can ride on horseback to the castle gates and stop only for a short photo session. In the afternoon, a few more kilometers of active riding at varying paces await us before we reach our accommodation for this night in Landol, where we’ll drift into the arms of Morpheus in a newly built guesthouse.

  4. Day 4 Childhood memories

After breakfast, we’ll saddle up and continue our journey. We’ll ride deep into the forest to enjoy the peace and take in the beauty of nature. The trail will lead us to… a secret spot, just as we start to feel a little hungry. We’ll stop there for a break and a rest before heading on again. In the afternoon, we’ll arrive at the Volk farm in Suhorje, where we’ll spend the night… sleeping on hay! That evening we’ll also have the chance to spend time with a herd of Appaloosa horses. Our hosts, the owners of the farm, are proud breeders of this remarkable breed and love to share stories. It’s a perfect opportunity to learn some fascinating facts about those horses. In summer — and for the brave, even in other seasons — you’ll also have the chance to feel like a kid again and take a dip in the nearby river.

  5. Day 5 The Secret Life of Nature

This day brings a long ride through the Brkini region, known for its fruit orchards and varied terrain with plenty of climbs and descents. Along the way, we’ll pass Prem Castle, a 13th-century fortress likely built on the remains of Roman fortifications. The castle is very distinctive, with cylindrical towers and Renaissance arcades surrounding its courtyard and a small stone well. Documented in 1220 for the first time, it once served as an administrative center and changed hands among prominent families, including the Knights of Udo and the Habsburgs. We’ll stop for lunch at a nearby pub. Strengthened—and perhaps even fortified — by local delicacies, we’ll begin the final stretch of our journey back to Šembije. Once we arrive, we’ll unsaddle our horses for the last time and thank them for the entire adventure. We’ll spend the night at the Požar guest farm, already known to us from our first evening.

  6. Day 6 Farewell to Slovenia

All riders will will be transferred to Ljubljana Airport for their return flight home.

The guide may modify the route depending on weather conditions and the riding skills of the group.

During the expedition, we’ll stay in a different place almost every night, though always under a roof.  Every host is a true horse enthusiast.

We spend the first and the last night at the Požar guest farm. On the second night, we stay at the B&B in Trnje, run by Lisa and Zvone — international judges of Icelandic horse competitions. The third night will be spent under the roof of the newly built Lipizzaner Lodge in Landol, hosted by Hana and Cris from England. The penultimate night takes us to the Volk farm in Suhorje, where we’ll feel like kids again sleeping on hay. Sleeping bags are needed here, though the conditions — by barn standards — are quite comfortable. For those who prefer a bed with sheets, an alternative accommodation in a nearby village can be arranged for an additional fee. This option must be requested in advance before the ride begins (but honestly, sleeping on hay is way more fun 🙂 ).

Equipment

On this ride, most of the horses are ridden primarily in Western saddles. We use bits, and the bridles feature the long leather straps typical of Western riding. String halters are also used. English-style saddles are available, but only for Icelandic horses.

Each horse is equipped with small saddlebags (for water, for example) and straps for carrying items such as a jacket or raincoat. We ride lightweight, with access to the support vehicle and luggage during breaks and overnight stops.

As always, wearing a helmet is recommended. Emergency helmets are available on site if needed, but we strongly advise bringing your own equipment.

What you should take with you

The Slovenian ride is a pretty comfortable one. All nights are spent under roofs, in charming agritourism farms, guesthouses, and lodges. The support vehicle transports luggage between the overnight bases. For the daily riding stages, you only need a small waist bag or a similar solution — for your phone and personal items.

A detailed packing list with our comments and recommendations will be sent in an organisational email one month before the ride.

  • Passport or ID card
  • Cash – euro
  • Electronic devices (camera, power bank, etc.)
  • Small waist bag or backpack (for documents, phone)
  • Canteen or other water container (a plastic water bottle works fine)
  • Sleeping bag for the hay overnight
  • Sunscreen with a high SPF
  • Insect repellent
  • Sun hat or other head covering
  • Personal riding gear: helmet, breeches, chaps, gloves, etc.
  • Trekking boots (much more suitable than standard jodhpur boots in these conditions)
