This ride offers a rare opportunity to explore the Karst Plateau in depth—from fairytale hills and rolling elevations to river valleys and the very edge of the continent. Along the way, hidden mountain trails, medieval castle ruins, subterranean cave kingdoms, deep-blue lakes and rivers, as well as charming villages and historic towns await. You will return home carrying vivid memories of southern Europe’s most evocative landscapes—and perhaps a gentle sense of longing, destined to become the motivation for your return.

No journey through this region would be complete without paying homage to the undisputed queen of the underground world and its greatest natural wonder: the nearly 20-kilometre-long Postojna Cave. At its heart, we encounter extraordinary formations such as the five-metre-high, snow-white stalagmite known as the Brilliant, as well as the mysterious “baby dragons”—rare cave-dwelling amphibians that have lived for centuries without access to daylight. We will also visit a medieval fortress listed in the Guinness World Records: Predjama Castle. Dramatically suspended halfway up a 100-metre cliff, it is the largest cave castle in the world and one of the most striking architectural marvels ever created by human ingenuity.

On this exceptional ride along the Slovenian–Italian border, you will discover from within the birthplace of the majestic horses of emperors, monarchs and Europe’s most illustrious noble houses—today most famously associated with the magnificent performances of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. The breed takes its name from the stud farm where it was first developed: Lipica in Slovenia, which we will visit during the journey.
Lipizzaner horses are born bay or black, and only between the ages of six and ten does their coat gradually turn grey; only a rare few remain black for life. The defining characteristics of the breed were profoundly shaped by the natural environment of the region—predominantly mountainous terrain with steep ascents and descents, covered in sparse yet mineral-rich grasses. Horses grazing in these conditions were required to travel long distances to feed, a challenge that left a lasting imprint on the endurance, strength and elegance of the breed. In 2022, the tradition of Lipizzaner breeding was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Our route will lead us into the deep forest sanctuaries of brown bears—yet without losing touch with refinement and comfort. We will pause in one of the most authentic and photogenic harbour towns on the Adriatic coast. Piran, with its Venetian-inspired architecture, once belonged to Venice and the Istrian cultural sphere. Perched at the tip of a rocky peninsula, it enchants visitors with its narrow streets, Tartini Square and beautifully preserved medieval defensive walls.

During the expedition, we ride well-trained Quarter Horse crosses combined with selected warmblood breeds popular in the region, including Thoroughbreds and purebred Arabians. The stable also houses two Icelandic horses, offering the exceptionally smooth tölt gait—ideal for teenagers or riders of a very light build. All horses are experienced, impeccably prepared for long-distance riding, and eager to move forward, breaking into a spirited gallop whenever the terrain invites it.

Air travel is best arranged to and from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Alternatively, guests may fly into Venice and continue by train to Postojna, where a transfer can be arranged.

The ride is moderately demanding and designed for confident riders. Both terrain and pace vary throughout the day, creating a balanced experience that alternates between active riding and moments of deep relaxation, depending on the stage of the route.

The minimum age for participants is 16 years. Minors may take part only when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Rider weight limit for this ride is 95 kg.

  1. Day 1 First delight

Riders arrive in Ljubljana and are transferred to our accommodation base near the village of Bač (approximately one hour). Alternatively, guests may fly into Venice and continue by train to Postojna, with a short transfer to Bač. Upon arrival, there is time to freshen up and relax after the journey. In the evening, we gather for a traditional welcome dinner featuring homemade dishes prepared from local, seasonal ingredients, and take a leisurely stroll around the village and its surroundings.

  2. Day 2 Lipica Stud Farm

Shortly after breakfast, we travel to a neighbouring village to meet our horses. We spend around three hours riding through stunning scenery, focusing on connecting with our horse and learning the fundamentals of western riding. After lunch, we experience one of the highlights of the journey: a visit to Lipica Stud Farm, the historic home of the Lipizzaner horses. Guests may enjoy a carriage ride, visit the Lipizzaner Museum, tour the stables, attend a spectacular equestrian performance (optional), or simply relax in the beautifully maintained grounds. We return to our base for dinner and overnight stay.

  3. Day 3 Hidden trails and karst landscapes

A long and immersive day in the saddle lies ahead—approximately seven hours of riding. After breakfast, we set off along a path originally carved for historic military use, passing a monumental stone wall before continuing through a dark tunnel dating back to the Second World War. Following our ascent to Šilentabor—the highest peak of the range on the south-western side of the Pivka Basin (751 m above sea level)—we are rewarded with sweeping, spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. For lunch, we stop at a local pub in Zagorje, before descending in the afternoon along the slopes of Primož, passing the remnants of wartime tunnels. The route then continues across the wetlands of the Pivka River, leading us to Trnje, where the horses will spend the night. Riders return to Bač for dinner and a well-earned rest.

  4. Day 4 Vanishing Lakes - Petelinjsko and Palsko

Another full day in the saddle awaits, around seven hours including breaks. We set off from Trnje towards two extraordinary seasonal lakes—Petelinjsko and Palsko. These lakes are part of a unique natural phenomenon: the Pivka River basin hosts 17 lakes that appear after heavy rains or spring thaws, then disappear into the karst underground, leaving lush meadows behind. We continue through green meadows, pausing at the ruins of Kalec Castle to rest beneath ancient lime trees, before returning to Bač for lunch. The afternoon ride is idyllic, following tranquil forest trails and concluding at the stables in Šembije.

  5. Day 5 Caves, castles and river crossing

We begin the day with a short drive to explore Postojna Cave, one of Slovenia’s top attractions. We will also visit the medieval Predjama Castle, built into the entrance of a cave and perched halfway up a 123-metre cliff—recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest cave castle in the world. On the return journey, we stop for lunch before an afternoon ride along the Reka River, including a thrilling horseback river crossing. We then ascend back to the hills, where, weather permitting, we may enjoy a breathtaking sunset from the summit. Alternatively, the day can end under the open sky, surrounded by grazing horses. Approximately four hours are spent in the saddle.

  6. Day 6 Piran - the old port town

On this day, the horses rest while we visit Piran, a historic port town with medieval walls preserved as a cultural monument. Narrow streets and tightly clustered houses descend from the hills to the central square and church, reflecting a truly Mediterranean character. Influenced by Venice, Piran is now considered one of the most authentic and photogenic towns along the Adriatic coast. Lunch is at the riders’ discretion, allowing everyone to choose their own dining experience in the charming port town. In the evening, we return to our base for dinner all together.

  7. Day 7 In bear territory

Our final day in the saddle is another full one, lasting around 6–7 hours. We ride to Milojna, deep into bear territory, where lucky riders may spot the predator or its tracks along the trail. This wild landscape offers breathtaking views from the hilltops. Lunch is served at an idyllic chalet on a clearing near WWII-era tunnels. In the afternoon, we return to Šembije for dinner, concluding the journey with a celebratory farewell dinner and one last lively evening together.

  8. Day 8 Farewell to Slovenia

All riders will will be transferred to Ljubljana Airport for their return flight home.

The guide might modify the route according to weather conditions and group's riding skills.

The Slovenian ride is a center-based ride, with our accommodation for all seven nights at the Požar agritourism estate near the village of Bač. The estate offers comfortable double and triple rooms, each with a private bathroom. Rooms are clean, cozy, and designed to reflect the region’s authentic character, providing a peaceful retreat for participants.

Single rooms are available upon prior request, subject to availability, for an additional €150 for the full stay.

Full board is provided throughout the riding days, with the exception of one lunch in the port town of Piran. Breakfasts are served buffet-style, featuring a selection of breads, homemade jams, cold cuts, cheeses, honey, yoghurts, cereals, and coffee and tea. Lunches and dinners are enjoyed at a variety of locations, usually in pubs and local eateries serving delicious home-cooked meals. Most meals include meat, but vegetarian options are available upon prior arrangement. Evening meals are accompanied by tasting portions of unique local wines, with opportunities to sample regional spirits as well.

Equipment

On this ride, most of the horses are ridden primarily in Western saddles. We use bits, and the bridles feature the long leather straps typical of Western riding. String halters are also used. English-style saddles are available, but only for Icelandic horses.

Each horse is equipped with small saddlebags (for water, for example) and straps for carrying items such as a jacket or raincoat. We ride lightweight, with access to the support vehicle and luggage during breaks and overnight stops.

As always, wearing a helmet is recommended. Emergency helmets are available on site if needed, but we strongly advise bringing your own equipment.
