Mallorca

Spain-Mallorca

2180

We are off to Mallorca! We will venture from the very heart of the island into its charming nooks and crannies, both the more popular ones and those almost completely unknown to tourists. We will set off for the Valley of Oranges, follow the traces of an old railway route that no longer exists, reach the monastery of Lluc, romp along the seashore and relax on the beaches. Mallorca will delight you with its views, climate, history, heritage and culture. There will be no shortage of delicious, Mediterranean cuisine and great local wines. We will mostly base on a farm that dates back to 1239, run by a family of amazing Mallorcan horsemen and their international team.

Mallorca’s natural beauty, extraordinary hosts, magnificent horses, history, heritage and excellent cuisine are a recipe for a great ride, and there is much more to it. From a farm in the heart of Mallorca, whose history dates back to the Middle Ages, we set off to explore the island. We’ll delight in its landscapes, nature, routes, heritage, flavours and – above all – on horses.

During the tour, we will start with exploring the extensive grounds of the farm where we spend most of the night. The place belongs to the family hosting us, natives of Mallorca for many generations. The Ferrer family raises cattle and sheep, grows fruit and vegetables and, above all, loves horses and runs an extraordinary equestrian centre. They are absolutely passionate equestrians who not only ride and teach riding, but also rescue horses. The centre and stables are an unusual, beautiful and interesting place and the hosts are always happy to welcome “horse people”. The family character of the farm and stables, the huge heart for horses and the hosts’ extraordinary gift for working and “talking” with horses make this a truly special place. We were delighted from the first minutes, and now we are taking you there.

During our trip, we will venture into the four corners of Mallorca. We will start with a horseback tour of the farm and its surroundings. With eighty hectares of farmland, there is no shortage of interesting and enjoyable horse riding trails, varied vegetation and beautiful views. It is worth travelling to Majorca just to see this one farm.

We will ride through orange and olive groves, vineyards and wild, desolate corners of the island. We’ll gallop along the beaches, swim with the horses in the turquoise sea, follow the trail of the old railway route and marvel at the sights and atmosphere of Mallorca every step of the way. Then we cross the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, where the Lluc Monastery is located, to stay there for a night or two. ‘Tramuntana’ in Catalan means “north of the rose of the winds”, indicating both the location of the mountain range in the northern part of the island and the cooler, northerly winds blowing over the mountains.

There will also be delicious food and great wine, of course. The local cuisine, typically Mediterranean, will delight you with its flavours and variety, as well as its local character, typical of Mallorca. In addition to meals on the farm, we will taste dishes in two interesting restaurants, and we will not fail to visit one of the local vineyards to see what we can find there.

For horse welfare reasons, the weight of the rider should not exceed 90 kg.

  1. Day 1 Welcome to Mallorca

Riders arrive in Palma de Mallorca airport head by cars straight to Sa Cova Vella, a farm and horse centre. The drive will take about 45 minutes. Once there, we will make ourselves comfortable, refresh, rinse off the journey with welcome drinks and set off for a walk around the farm. In the evening we will enjoy a delicious Mediterranean dinner and a welcome party. Night in the villa.

  2. Day 2 Orange groves

After breakfast at the villa, we’ll head to the riding center at the farm. Our guides will help us with horses, we will saddle up and set off to an area called the Valley of the Orange Groves. The history of orange cultivation in Mallorca dates back to the 10th century and the fruit trees are still grown there today. At lunchtime we will return to our villa to have a traditional paella for dinner and relax for a while. In the afternoon, we will saddle the horses again to set off through the farm area where horses, cattle and sheep graze among the growing fig, olive and almond trees. After the ride we will return to the villa, where dinner awaits us in the evening.

  3. Day 3 The Green Way

In the morning we will have a solid breakfast, saddle the horses and set off for the day. The rount runs along country roads at first, through cultivated areas and passing vine plantations on the way. We will stop for lunch at S’Estacion, a beautiful restaurant located in an old railway station. After our meal, we will hop into our saddles and ride along the Green Way, an old, abandoned railway route that the station was a part of. The sandy roads are perfect for faster riding amid cornfields and Mediterranean groves. In the late afternoon we will return to the villa for dinner, a party and an overnight stay.

  4. Day 4 Son Serra de Marina

After breakfast we head straight for the stables. We will first head towards the valley before turning towards the coast. On the way we will stop for lunch at a local ranch. We will then continue our journey between small farms, pine forests and juniper-covered areas to reach sandy trails that will take us directly to the sea. If the weather is good, we can swim in the turquoise water with the horses and relax on the beach. Once we have enjoyed the beautiful afternoon it will be time to return to the villa. Taxis and trucks will take riders and horses back to the farm. And in the evening, as usual, we will sit down to dinner together.

  5. Day 5 Wine and beaches

Today our horses will rest and we will head to the other side of the island. We’ll spend a part of the day visiting a local vineyard with spectacular views of the sparkling turquoise bay to enjoy some local wine and tapas. Then we head to a wild beach for a dip in the sea. On our return to Sa Cova Vella, we will have some more time to relax and enjoy a traditional Mediterranean dinner on the terrace, with a cosy, roofed fireplace spot or a… cave (in case of rain).

  6. Day 6 Lluc Monastery

In the morning we will leave the villa by car to reach the town of Pollença. From there we will set off on horses through forests that remember ancient times. Along the way we will stop for a picnic and then continue our route along stone roads. Solidly in the afternoon, we will arrive at our destination, the Lluc Monastery. dating back to 13th century. Located on the pass of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range the monastery is considered Mallorca’s main religious site and a sanctuary, houses a pilgrimage site, a school, the Escorca town administration and a hostel. We will have dinner on site with a great sight to surrounding mountains and stay for the the night at the monastery’s hostel.

  7. Day 7 Serra de Tramuntana

After breakfast, we will set off from the monastery downhill back to Pollença. After leaving the monastery’s ground we will reach olive groves with an amazing view of the Mediterranean Sea stretching around us. The route is beautiful, winding between the tops of the mountain range and crossing an old stone bridge from Roman times to lead us down to the town.  Then we will return to our rustic farm house. This evening we will have our last, farewell dinner together to stay late and have fun together.

  8. Day 8 Farewell to Mallorca

It is time to leave the delightful island of Mallorca. All riders will be taken to the airport and set off on their return journey home.

The guide might modify the route according to weather conditions and group's riding skills.

The tour in Mallorca is a pretty comfy one. The overnight itinerary, depending on the time of year and circumstances, may change slightly. 5 or 6 nights will be spent on a lively Majorcan farm, in a comfortable villa. Sa Cova Vella, for that is its name, is a restored, beautiful, rustic villa with of typical Mallorcan architecture. Its history dates back to 1239 and today it is combined with a farm and a horse centre. There are 8 beds in double en-suite rooms, a big yard, a cozy terrace, a lounge area with a swimming pool and…. a cave, from which the place takes its name.
We will spend 1 or 2 nights at the monastery of Lluc, whose history dates back to the 13th century. The monastery is a popular pilgrimage site and, with its museum and botanical garden, is definitely one of the places worth visiting in Mallorca. At the monastery, we will stay overnight in comfortable double rooms with en-suite bathrooms.

Most meals will be served in the villa. During our overnight stay at the monastery, we will go to a local restaurant for dinner and have breakfast the following day at the monastery. During the non-riding day we will visit a local winery to taste its products 🙂

All meals are provided, from dinner on the first day to breakfast on the last day. Mallorca’s cuisine is typically Mediterranean, with an abundance of seafood and fish, vegetables, meats and – of course – excellent wines. Both gourmets and wine lovers will be heppy.
A very tasty vegetarian option is also available.

Equipment

In Mallorca we mainly use English saddles, but there are also Spanish and western saddles on site. The saddles are constructed traditionally, we use bits.

There are smaller and larger saddlebags on site for water and handy items. Valuables (documents, telephone, cash) should be carried in a tightly closed pouch or waist pouch.

What you should take with you
