The Thracian Trail is an 8-day journey through the foothills of the Eastern Rhodopes—one of Bulgaria’s most atmospheric regions, where mass tourism still feels far away. Over five riding days, we follow routes once used by shepherds, traders, and travelers, crossing a constantly changing mosaic of deciduous forests, rounded ridgelines, open meadows, and quiet villages where daily life still runs at a rural pace. The trail is designed for riders who are looking for a diverse ride: long stretches in the saddle, opportunities for jolly canters on flatter ground, and steady climbs that reward you with wide Balkan horizons.

This ride is also about place and story, because the Eastern Rhodopes are layered with history in a way that is tangible on the ground. Thracian sanctuaries and rock-cut sites sit in the landscape as if they have always belonged there, while later Roman influence and the subsequent medieval and Ottoman eras left their own traces in routes, settlements, and strategic viewpoints. The highlight is Perperikon—monumental, cliff-carved, and profoundly atmospheric—visited with a professional guide and often timed for the kind of sunset that makes the stone glow. Between trail days, the programme also brings you to Plovdiv’s Old Town, widely considered the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe, with evidence of Neolithic settlements dating back to the 6th millennium BCE, where Roman and later architectural layers create a rare sense of historical continuity.

You will be riding in a region that feels remote—rocky areas, reservoir shorelines, forest corridors, open fields—yet the logistics are smooth, the meals are grounded in regional tradition, and the evenings give you space to recover properly. There is time to slow the pace when it matters: a lunch by the water, a chance to kayak on the reservoir, or a relaxed village night with sauna and jacuzzi before the final long return ride. The result is a trail that stays riding-forward, but never one-dimensional: strong daily saddle time, a distinct sense of Balkan landscape, and cultural anchors that make the journey feel bigger than the route itself.

During this tour, we ride Arabian, Shagya Arabian, East Bulgarian, Pintabian, Bulgarian Sport and Haflinger horses. All of them are pretty typical mid-frame sized horses. They are well prepared, smart, robust and physically fit horses, perfect for moving around mountainous paths of the Rhodopes.

This trail is a moderately demanding one, meant for confident horse riders. Both the terrain and riding pace vary throughout days, making it both a chilled-out and active ride, depending on the day and stage of the trail.

Rider weight limit for this trail is set to 90 kg / 200 lbs.

  1. Day 1 Welcome to Bulgaria

Riders fly to Bulgaria and are transferred from Sofia/Plovdiv airport. It’s best to plan your arrival before 4:30 PM. A drive from Sofia to Asenovgrad where we stay for the first night, takes between 2 and 2,5 hours. The drive from Plovdiv airport is short, takes about 15 minutes. Upon arrival you will settle in a hotel and have a bit of time to refresh after travel. Depending on arrival times and riders’ will we can go sightseeing in Asen’s Fortress or Bachkovo Monastery. Both are worth a visit. The fortress is a medieval Bulgarian stronghold situated on a high rocky ridge above the Asenitsa River, 2–3 km south of Asenovgrad in the Rhodopes. Its history spans centuries, with the earliest fortifications dating back to the Thracian period, later strengthened during Roman and Byzantine times. The fortress offers panoramic views over Asenovgrad, the Asenitsa River valley and the surrounding Rhodope Mountains. Bachkovo is the second-largest monastery in Bulgaria and one of the oldest ones, founded in the 11th century. It is renowned for its spiritual atmosphere, remarkable frescoes and the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, attracting visitors from around the world.

  2. Day 2 Long First Day

After breakfast rides will be transferred by cars to the horse base in Novakovo. There you’ll meet the horses, have a short briefing, saddle up and ride out to start the trail. Today’s part is pretty long, we have 32 km to cover, which will take us around 5 hours. The terrain is predominantly mountainous, with forest sections and panoramic views of the region. On the way we’ll reach a village called Dushka, stop for a short break and snacks and then continue our ride. Upon reaching our destination, Sarnitsa village, we will enjoy an open-air lunch surrounded by beautiful scenery: a lake, traditional fountains and old wells. Then we’ll transfer to Nikolovo village, check in the hotel and in the evening we’ll have a traditional Bulgarian dinner together.

  3. Day 3 Perperikon

In the morning we will return to our horses in Sarnitsa. We have a shortes riding day of the trail ahead of us, some 23 km (around 3.5 hours) and today’s part combines riding with visiting one of the region’s signature historical highlights. The trail will take us over hilly and flat terrain, following the route via The Five Fountains towards Beli Plast village through an area known for striking natural formations, including the Rock Mushrooms phenomenon. After unsaddling in Beli Plast, we’ll transfer by car to the nearby village of Stremtsi for lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon we’ll visit Perperikon with a professional English-speaking guide. The place is one of Europe’s most fascinating ancient complexes—an atmospheric rock city associated with Thracian heritage.  If the nature cooperates we’ll try to catch a memorable Rhodope sunset there, too. In the late evening we will head back to Nikolovo for dinner and night.

  4. Day 4 Trakiets Reservoir

In the morning, after breakfast, we’ll drive to Beli Plast, saddle up and ride out. We have about 26 km to cover, which should take around 3,5 hours. The path runs through mixed hilly and flat ground to reach the Trakiets Reservoir, a large artificial lake on the Harmanliyska River. Primarily a source of industrial and farming water, the reservoir is a wide, open landscape of water—an ideal setting to rest after the ride. After unsaddling near the shore, we’ll enjoy an open-air lunch and free time. If you’ll be up for some additional activities there are two kayaks available for paddling on the reservoir. In the evening we’ll drive to Nikolovo, have dinner and stay for the night there.

  5. Day 5 Ride and Relax

After breakfast we’ll go back to our horses, saddle up and ride out. Today we have 25 km to cover, which will take us around 3,5 hours. First we’ll circle the resevoir and then head through fields and forested areas. The trail runs nearly entirely on flat land, so we’ll speed up every once in a while. In the afternoon we’ll arrive to the village of Bryastovo, set at the foothills of the Eastern Rhodopes. After lunch we’ll have time to relax: the guesthouse offers a small spa area with sauna and jacuzzi. If you want to stretch your legs, an eco-trail toward the Garvanitsa view point begins nearby. For adrenaline seekers, the host can arrange a 2-hour ATV off-road tour. In the evening we’ll have a traditional Bulgarian dinner.

  6. Day 6 The Oldest City of Europe

Today our horses get a well-deserved rest and we are off to Plovdiv. We’ll have a guided tour of Plovdiv’s Old Town with a professional English-speaking guide. Plovdiv is one of the oldest living cities in the world and holds the title of the oldest city of Europe, with visible layers of Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman heritage. The Old Town is really something: cobblestone streets and Renaissance houses, the Ancient Theatre, the Roman Stadium, and Dzhumaya Mosque (described as one of the oldest functioning mosques in the Balkans, built over older foundations) are just some of the highlights. After the guided walk we’ll have some free time, have lunch and enjoy the afternoon in the Old Town. In the evening we’ll return to Bryastovo for another traditional Bulgarian dinner, a folklore surprise, and overnight at the guesthouse.

  7. Day 7 Last Day in The Saddle

It’s our last day in the saddle on the trail and it’s a pretty long one. We have 32 km in approximately 5 hours to cover, with mostly mountainous terrain ahead of us. We’ll have plenty of panoramic views on the way, riding along line where plains and Easter Rhodopes meet. In the middle of the ride we’ll stop for a short break and a snack and then ride the last part to reach the horse base in Novakovo. There we’ll thank our horses and have a late lunch at the stables. Then we will transfer by cars to Plovdiv where we’ll settle in a hotel. Once refreshed we’ll head out to the city center to enjoy the atmosphere and have our last dinner together.

  8. Day8 Farewell to Bulgaria

It’s time to leave Bulgaria and head home. After breakfast, at pre-arranged times, all riders will be transferred to the airport in Sofia or Plovdiv. In case of later departures a separate, private transfer can be arranged.

The guide might modify the route according to weather conditions and group's riding skills.

We spend all nights during the tour hotels and local guesthouses, in double or triple shared rooms. One night in a hotel in Asenovgrad, three nights in a hotel in Nikolovo, two nights in a guesthouse in Bryastovo and one night in a hotel in Plovdiv. All places are comfy, with access to all regular hygenic facilities, in Bryastovo we also have a small sauna and a jacuzzi at our disposal.

Riders are accommodated in double rooms by default. Single rooms are available upon earlier request, depending on availability, and at an additional fee.

The ride includes nearly all meals: 7 breakfasts, 5 lunches and 7 dinners are provided during the tour. One meal – lunch during the sightseeing tour in Plovdiv – is to be purchased individually. Additionally, various snacks, drinks – water, tea, coffee, wine and beer – will be served.
The traditional Bulgarian cuisine is rich and tasty. There is no shortage of meats, often bbq/grilled, vegetables, bread, pastries and dairy products are also very common. Alcohol, especially wine and rakija, is often served with meals. Many products and ingredients are homemade and come from local farmers and producers.
