On top of things we will ride right into the mountains, cross a snowy, windy pass at 3400 meters and ride down to endless pastures and the majestic Song-kol lake where we spend a frosty night in a yurt. Between our rides we will get to see a game of Kok-boru. visit local saunas and relax in a pool. This tour takes us through a number of locations, different landscapes and multiple cultural experiences, but above all it’s an amazing Winter riding experience.

We are off to Kyrgyzstan, right into a frosty embrace of Winter! We will face the Arctic-like endlessness of frozen lakes, snowy mountain ranges and monumental nature. Due to outside temperatures we will spend up to 4 hours in the saddle per day, however, the program is also loaded with different activities, on- and off-horse. We will ride to the Song-Kol lake to spend a night in a yurt there and ride back the next day. The yurt is heated with a stove, but temperatures outside can drop as low as -30°C (-22°F). We will meet local hunters who still hunt together with goldean eagles and accompany them on horses. A game of Kok-Boru (or: Ulak-Tartysh) a very old, traditional Kyrgyz sport is also something worth seeing – let’s go and watch a friendly match! Along the way we will be hosted by Kyrgyz families and in family-ran guesthouses. A couple of times  during the tour we will also visit small, local saunas and relax in a pool. There are more thing along the way that we have prepared but let’s  keep that as a surprise. 🙂

During our trip we stay overnight in several places, under different conditions and circumstances. We spend two nights at a local hotel in Bishkek. One, unique night is set in a yurt right on the shore of the Song-Kol lake. On all other nights we will be hosted in local guesthouses and by local families at their own houses.
A car will assist us for most of the tour and carry us between several locations. Except for the night at the Song-Kol lake, where whe sleep in a yurt, we always spend nights in buildings, where our hosts already await hungry and (sometimes) somewhat cold riders.

A part of the ride runs in high mountains, with the the peek point at 3,400 meters above sea level, in demanding weather conditions. The specifics of this tour require riders to be in good health and in fairly good physical condition. This expedition also requires preparing and equipping for riding in real Winter conditions.

Riders arrive in Kyrgyzstan. We usually fly out the previous calendar day and reach Bishkek. All riders will be picked up at the airport and transferred to a hotel to rest and catch up on some sleep. Around early afternoon we will go out for a walk in Bishkek, have lunch in a local restaurant and visit the new main museum to learn a bit about Kyrgyzstan. In the evening a welcome dinner at a restaurant awaits us. Our Kyrgyz team will tell us a bit about  stay in a hotel in Bishkek for the night.

  2. Day 2 Suusamyr valley

After breakfast we get in the car and leave Bishkek, the journey will take about 4 hours. We cross the Too-Ashuu pass and arrive in the Kökömeren river valley, where we will have an outdoor lunch. Then we will saddle up the horses and set off towards the village of Kyzyl-Oi, about 10 kilometres away. We will spend up to 2 hours in the saddle and warm up with our first canters. In the late afternoon we will arrive to the village to have dinner and spend the night hosted by a local family.

  3. Day 3 Shepherds and horsemen

After breakfast we ride to meet local shepherds. We will hop into our saddles and head out of the village, an trail leading to a horse farm. There we will look for herds of horses scattered around the area. This part of the day will take about 2 hours. Once there, depending on the weather, we will ride horses in the area or spend more time with a local family. We will have lunch with the shepherds at their simple farm and then return on horses to Kyzyl-Oi. From there, by car, we will drive to the village of Kyzart, where we settle at our now hosts’ house and have dinner. There is a little, local sauna in the village that we can use.

  4. Day 4 Frozen lake frosty night

In the morning we will go by car to the Bazar-Turuk Gorge, where we will mount our horses. The ride will take us approximately four hours. First we ride through mildly uphill area to start our climb towards the pass located at 3,400m above sea level. The approach will get a bit steeper and gradually more and more snowy. After reaching and crossing the pass we will ride into an endless snowy landscape, stretching all the way to horizon. We will descend towards Song-Kol Lake to reach its shore. At this time of year the surface of the lake is covered with thick ice and covered with a cap of snow. In the afternoon we will reach the only settlement of Winter yurts in the valley. Temperatures here can drop to -30° C (-22 °F) at night. Our camp is properly prepared and our yurt is equipped with a stove that we will keep hot all the night. Before it gets dark there’s still some time to have fun – you’ll like it 🙂 We’ll enjoy the sunset, dinner and then a amazing, frosty night at Song-Kol. We sleep in the yurt, in sleeping bags.

  5. Day 5 Mountain villages

In the morning we will have breakfast in the yurt. Next we will saddle our horse and ride out. We will take the same trail we rode yesterday, although it will look and feel quite different. Riding back will take us around 4 hours. Upon arrival to Bazar-Turuk Gorge we will change our brave horses to mechanical ones. A car will take us to Kyzart village for a late lunch. In the afternoon we will go to Kochkor valley, where a comfy guesthouse awaits us. There’s a local sauna in this village, too. After two days riding to Song-Kol and back you will enjoy it.

  6. Day 6 Nomad games and The Kyrgyz Sea

Today we don’t ride, although there will be an unusual opportunity to jump in the saddle. After breakfast we drive to the Jaichy valley, where we will… cheer at a game. We are going to a Kok-boru match. The game is very old, dating back to nomadic times, and very popular in this part of Asia. Kyrgyz national team is one of the very best ones in the world. Although players today are professionals, the game requires unusual riding skills definitely is a full-contact sport, for both horses and people. We will have some time to mount Kok-boru horses and hang out with players. After the game we will go to a local hunter in Jaichy, where we will have lunch together. The it’s time to drive to the beautiful area of the Lake Issyk-Kul. The road will take us up to 2 hours. At the Kesken-Bel pass we will stop and go for a hike to Kazka Park, where we can admire the colourful canyons and the panorama of the lake. Issyk-Kul is often called the Kyrgyz Sea, as it is the largest body of water in Central Asia, the second largest mountain lake in the world (after Lake Titicaca) and its water is mildly salty. Next, we will get in the car and drive to the local pool house and hot springs at Kadjy-Sai. After basking in the pool, we will drive to the village of Bokonbay, where a guesthouse and dinner await us.

  7. Day 7 Eagle hunters

After breakfast we will dress up in proper outfits (that we’ll provide – surprise) and set off on horseback to accompany local eagle hunters. The tradition of hunting with birds dates back to ancient times. Today they still   Together we will set off to the nearby steppe, where the hunters will try to hunt small game. They don’t always succeed, especially with… well a bunch of (often) noisy foreign riders who will scare animals away within a 3 km radius 😉 Jokes aside, they will tell us a bit about the history and tradition of eagle hunting, how do they get their birds, raise them, live together and form a bond. In the late afternoon we will ride back to the town for a meal. Next we will fo by car to Chong-Kemin, where a guesthouse, a swimming pool and dinner await us.

  8. Day 8 Last ride and Bishkek

After breakfast, unless the weather throws us a surprise (and it does, sometimes) we will saddle up the horses for the last time. Mount up and let’s ride out for 2-3 hours to the surrounding mountain ridge of Chong-Kemin. Once we return to Ashuu we will have lunch and then we leave by car and head to Bishkek. On the way, depending on time and groups’ will, we might stop at one of the few monuments in Kyrgyzstan – the Burana Tower, a remnant of the famous Silk Road. In the evening we will arrive in Bishek and head out to our last, farewell dinner together. When the time comes we will return to the hotel in Bishkek for the night.

  9. Day 9 Farewell to Kyrgyzstan

It’s time to leave Kyrgyzstan. All riders will be transferred to the airport for their flights.

The guide might modify the route according to weather conditions and group's riding skills. This particular expedition, by its very nature, is weather-dependent. The Kyrgyz team might change or swap particular days according to their judgement.

The Winter expedition to Kyrgyzstan is a cold one and it’s planned accordingly. Apart from a night at Song-kol lake, where we stay in a yurt, we spend all nights in buildings. Accomodation type and standard varies, depending on the location. We spend two nights, at the beginning and at the end of the tour, in a small, family-ran hotel. All other overnight stays are either with families in their houses or in local guest houses. In two of those places we will have access to a banya – a small, local, public sauna. We will also visit an indoor pool built on hot springs.
At the Song-kol lake we stay overnight in an insulated Winter yurt, heated with a stove. All riders should either have their own Winter sleeping bags for that night or rent them in Bishkek (we’ll help with that if you choose to rent one).

All meals, starting with lunch on the arrival day and dinner on the last evening (or breakfast next morning, depending on flights) are covered. Meals will be prepared by local hosts and, at times, by our guides. Kyrgyz cuisine is quite varied, interesting and tasty. Dishes are often high-calory and sometimes a bit fatty, which in case of this Winter tour has multiple advantages. Typical meals consist of soups, lots of meat and vegetables, cheese, but also some sweets, which Kyrgyz like and always have on their tables. Vegetarian dishes are available, although outside Bishkek they might and will be quite limited, especially in Winter.

Equipment

In Kyrgyzstan we use Eastern saddles, very popular in Eastern Europe and central Asia for centuries. It’s a very old saddle type that many other saddle types evolved from. Although much older it resembles a cross between English and western saddles. Quite versatile and suitable for various tasks the Eastern type saddles are largely popular in this part of the World being quite comfortable, versatile and great for mountain riding. Local riders tend to use very short stirrup belts due to their riding style, English and western style riders will usually ride on longer stirrup belts.

This tour requires proper preparations. Through the tour weather conditions will vary, with temperatures usually between 0°C to -15°C. You might encounter temperatures reaching up to +10°C in some locations, but temperatures will be mostly below 0°C and between -5°C and -15°C in the mountains. The coldest night is the one at the Song-kol lake, with temperatures often dropping between -20°C and -30°C.
Proper clothes and equipment: Winter boots, thermal underwear, warm riding pants, Winter jackets, gloves and are essential. It’s cold out there, so every rider has to be prepared for true Winter.
